Application Instructions

Please read through all of the information provided on this page prior to submitting an application to the program.

Interest Form

The first step is to fill out an interest formA member of the Bard-Smolny team will contact you to discuss the program, next steps in the application process, and answer any questions.

Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate students at North American colleges or universities who are in good academic standing are invited to apply.  Applicants are typically second-, third-, and fourth-year students; independent students and recent graduates may also be eligible. 

A minimum Russian language level equivalent of four college semesters of instruction is required.  Participation in a summer immersion language program is strongly recommended (but not required).


Application Deadlines

October 1 Spring Semester
March 1 Summer Language Intensive
April 1 Fall Semester / Academic Year

Applications are processed on a rolling basis and must be received by the application deadline.  Early applications are encouraged. 

Be sure to allow sufficient time to acquire, complete, and submit all supporting documentation.  Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Applicants should receive notification of their admission status within one month of applying.

Language Assessments

Applicants to both the semester and summer programs are required to undergo Russian language placement testing as part of the application process.  We recommend that you request the assessment from us several weeks prior to the date you intend to submit your application. 

Please send an e-mail to smolny@bard.edu to request a copy of the language assessment as it is not included as part of the application packet.

Scholarships

Limited need-based scholarships are available to students whose home institution has a significantly lower tuition rate than does Bard and/or who are recipients of financial aid that cannot be transferred to the program. 

In advance of applying, please make sure to research your home institution's financial policies for study abroad programs. 

Applicants must apply for scholarship aid at the same time as applying to the Bard-Smolny Program.

Passport and Visa

At the time of application, students must either have a valid passport or be in the process of applying for a new passport.  According to current Russian visa regulations, passports must have at least two blank pages (preferably more) and be valid for a minimum of 18 months after the program end date.

Please refer to following guide to help determine if you need to renew your passport prior to applying to the Bard-Smolny Program.

At the time of application studentsmust submit either:  1) a SIGNED, CLEAR photocopy of the information page of their passport or 2) a copy of a dated receipt proving that they have already applied for a new passport on an EXPEDITED basis.  Non-U.S. citizens must also submit a copy of their J-1 visa or green card.  Applications submitted without this information will be considered incomplete and will not be processed.
