Bard undergraduates study in nearly 50 countries each year.
Bard students who wish to study abroad for a semester, academic year, or summer are encouraged to seek out programs that allow them to attend classes within foreign universities, as opposed to those offering courses attended solely by Americans. Bard offers such integrated programs at universities in Berlin, Germany, and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan through Bard Abroad. The College also participates in several exchanges, consortiums, and other special programs that can facilitate study abroad.

The Study Abroad Process

Eligible Bard students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and have successfully moderated. Programs are available during the semester, academic year, and summer. Information sessions led by Trish Fleming are held at the beginning and end of every semester. Students must have a one-on-one meeting with Trish before submitting a Petition to Study Away. Bard financial assistance transfers only for students participating in the Bard Abroad programs (Bard in Berlin, AUCA-Bard) or Tuition Exchanges. More information is available below.

  • 1. Determine Your Eligibility
Bard students* must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and must have successfully moderated in order to be eligible to study abroad (usually during the junior year). The only exception to that rule is the Begin in Berlin program for first-year students (who may apply to study at Bard College Berlin for their first academic year).
  • 2. Choose a Program
As a Bard student you have many study abroad options, such as: Bard Abroad semester, academic year, and summer programs; Tuition Exchange programs with other institutions; summer or winter language intensives; and non-Bard programs.

  • 3. Submit a Petition to Study Away
Director for Study Abroad and Student Exchange Trish Fleming offers study abroad info sessions as each semester begins. Do all you can to attend one of these in-depth sessions before scheduling a 1:1 session with her to discuss your options. Planning ahead is very important. NOTE: You cannot submit a Petition for Study Abroad before meeting 1:1 with Trish Fleming ([email protected]).

  • 4. Explore Financial Aid and Funding Options

Bard financial assistance only transfers to Bard students participating in a Bard Abroad program or Tuition Exchange. Tuition remission exchange packages do not automatically transfer to study abroad opportunities. Students should consult with the Office of Student Financial Services to determine the exact terms and conditions of their aid package.

Students participating in a study abroad program through another U.S. or foreign institution will not receive any Bard-based aid. However, state and federal funding—such as TAP, Pell, Perkins, and Stafford Loans—may be transferable. Students should also inquire directly with the sponsoring institution about the availability of aid.
